Rare Movies

It is believed that almost 80 percent of the films made before 1930 have vanished forever due to a variety of reasons including the unstable nature of the film or other technological aspects. Some times these Rare Movies are also called hard to find movies. In addition up until a few years ago most studios did not make an attempt to preserve their films since they had served their purpose, and storing the fragile film is very expensive.

Finding Rare Movies on DVD: Since DVDs are divided up into regions... many movies are only released in specific regions. So if you don't find it in one region it could very well have been released in another region. Just keep in mind that you will need a region free DVD player that can play both PAL and NTSC... so once you do find a movie make sure that you have the proper DVD player to play it on. Another thing to note for these Rare Movies with a region less player... a movie could be out in different versions for different regions (in one region it could have the directors cut... and in another it may have 2 discs of special features... and in another region it could only have the movie and the trailer for it). It is very important if you start buying outside your region to make sure that the DVD has either a language or appropriate subtitles for you to understand it.

Here are some examples of Rare Movies: horror movies, B-movies, drive-in movies, exploitation, sexploitation, women in prison, martial arts, grind house sleaze, Euro Trash, or something even weirder.

Please be aware that you'll also find quite a bit of raw language and caustic humor on these sites. If you are easily offended or have aspirations toward political "correctness" you probably shouldn't be here. References to racism, sexism, misogyny, misanthropy and dwarf tossing should be taken in the spirit intended -- as just good, clean fun.

Foreign movies that have not been released in the United States are considered in the public domain are also hard to find or Rare Movies. With other films, however, the legal standing is murkier. Technically, it is illegal to sell copies of a movie without owning the rights to distribution. But because the movies are not commercially available otherwise and the selling is on such a small scale, few distributors ever face legal problems. That is the main problem of Rare Movies.

"People call it the gray market," said Josh Warren, advertising assistant for Scarecrow Video in Seattle, one of the nation's largest independent video stores. "It's that middle area of the economy where -- for lack of a better word -- nerds trade films among each other."
